Alex “ALEX” McMeekin has officially left Team Vitality. ALEX had been with Vitality since the latter part of 2018 after being picked up for LDLC. The 24-year-old revealed the news via a TwitLonger where he reflected on his time with Vitality.
“It has been an incredible ride, from finding out I’ll be playing for Vitality while boarding a plane to the Caribbean for Christmas to taking over the IGL role, making 11 straight playoffs, 6 finals & 4 trophies,” he said.
In the beginning Nathan “NBK-” Schmitt and ALEX split many of the in-game leader duties before NBK- left the team and ALEX became the lone leader. He helped to guide the team to 11 consecutive playoffs where they seemed able to best everyone but Team Liquid who were dominating the scene at the time.
ALEX gave a nod to the teams coach Rémy whom he gave credit for much of his success. “The person who taught me the most is Rémy, he is an incredible coach, an incredible person and a good friend. Who would’ve thought when we first met all those years ago, that one day we would be standing side by side on the biggest stages the world has to offer. I wish you, your wife & beautiful son nothing but the best now, and for the rest of your lives.”
It’s expected that ALEX may be part of the new Cloud9 project in the works which is being constructed by Henry “HenryG” Greer (General Manager) and Aleksandar “kassad” Trifunović (Coach). He gave a little hint of it at the end of his TwitLonger where he stated “By the way, how many UK players is too many for one team?” which coincides with many remarks about UK players from HenryG who also hails from the region.
The restructuring of Cloud9 will certainly need a proven leader and ALEX brings just that to the table.
