At the beginning of every year, there are often some rather
big name players who are without a team and 2020 is no different as we’ve
identified at least six well-known Dota 2 players without contracts currently.
While there are definitely many other players without contracts
or teams as we head into the new year, these are the six which stand out above
all others as they have been extremely prominent in recent years.
MidOne
Yeik ‘MidOne’ Nai Zheng has spent the better part of four years playing alongside Team Secret but after The International 2019, the player moved to inactive on the roster. After playing alongside Secret once more at the recent ONE Esports Dota 2 World Pro Invitational in Singapore and playing at the DreamLeague Season 13 qualifier with SEAMonkeys, MidOne officially departed from the Secret roster but he has been tied to many rumours. With LGD.International being formed in the Southeast Asia region, many assumed that MidOne would be heading the new squad – but nothing has been confirmed just yet as the player remains teamless. However, at this moment in time, it would seem as though SEAMonkeys will continue forward although this is unconfirmed.
s4
After winning TI3 with Alliance all the way back in 2013, s4 has had a mixed bag of Dota 2 with some of the best teams in the world. After moving from Team Secret to OG and having a short stint back with Alliance too, s4 has spent just over a year with Evil Geniuses, up until the end of TI9 where he moved to inactive. Currently s4 remains as an inactive member of the EG squad but has not had any sign of finding a new team just yet or making a return.
SumaiL
Another member of the EG squad to have left following The
International 2019 was Syed Sumail ‘SumaiL’ Hassan. Following TI9, the player
moved to inactive on the EG roster after which he would move to Quincy Crew for
a very short period. Sumail helped Quincy Crew qualify to the first Minor of
the season but before the team entered the event and were signed by Chaos
Esports Club, Sumail would depart and remain as an inactive member on EG. There
have been a few signs that he would remain involved with Quincy Crew/Chaos EC
after he stood in for Quinn ‘CCnC’ Callahan at ESL One Hamburg 2019 but nothing
has been heard from the player since.
Ninjaboogie
Michael ‘ninjaboogie’ Ross Jr has been a major part of the SEA scene for some time playing alongside the best teams in the region such as Mineski and TNC Predator. After returning to Mineski early in 2019, ninjaboogie would depart the roster once more following a poor performance at TI9 and since has only been seen playing alongside MidOne at SEAMonkeys during the DreamLeague Season 13 regional qualifiers. While the team would did not make it through to the Major, as mentioned before, it is completely unconfirmed whether the team will continue forward.
Misery
Rasmus ‘Misery’
Filipsen has had an extremely long Dota 2 career, having played for countless teams.
Having played for the likes of LGD.International, EG, paiN Gaming and Digital
Chaos and even having a short stint in coaching, Misery was last seen alongside
Chaos EC at TI9 where the team were left in last place. It is still unsure whether
or not he will return to a coaching role or back to playing any time soon.
Saksa
Martin ‘Saksa’ Sazdov
is another player who has been missing from the Dota 2 scene since TI9. After departing
from the Ninjas in Pyjamas squad following extremely poor results in Shanghai,
China, Saksa has only been seen playing alongside a Danish roster at the WESG
North Europe finals. However, apart from this, the only signs of what Saksa has
been doing is when he posted a picture of his account being at the top of the
European Support MMR rankings. While Saksa has been known to be both coach and
player, it is unsure of when or in what capacity he will return in.
It is possible that we can see all these players on teams by
the time the next Minor and Major qualifiers come around in February 2020 but
at this moment in time, it is unlikely that we’ll hear or see anything until January
comes to an end.
