WePlay! Esports Refutes Claims of $10M CS:GO and Dota 2 Tournaments in 2021-2022

Esports tournament organizer WePlay! Esports issued a statement refuting a report that it would host Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 events from  2021 through 2022 with $10M USD in prizes. The initial report, which has since been removed, was highlighted in this Reddit post

According to the initial reporting, WePlay! Esports would host 12 CS:GO and Dota 2 tournaments, offer 1,700 broadcasting hours in both English and Russian, and would hold LAN events in Kyiv, Los Angeles, Australia.

In a statement issued to The Esports Observer on Friday, WePlay! Esports categorized the reports as “rumors,” and noted that while it would like to host events in China, Australia, or other countries and “allocate sums of that magnitude to prize pools and schedule events two years ahead” of time, this kind of early planning is not possible under “current circumstances.”

Oleh Humemiuk, general manager of the WePlay! Esports Media Holding, said that they do have tentative plans for 2021-2022, but the company isn’t ready to disclose them at this time.

“Our team estimates that despite the uncertainty of the esports global calendar and complications caused by the pandemic, 2021 and 2022 will be tightly packed with tournaments,” he said. “We are preparing an event schedule with unusual creative formats but due to quarantine restrictions, we can’t disclose it yet. Esports fans will have to wait for new announcements.”
