Bill Burr Defends Former Mandalorian Co-Star Gina Carano

Comedian Bill Burr defended Mandalorian co-star Gina Carano, who was recently fired from the hit Star Wars show after posting a tweet in which she compared American conservatives to Jewish people persecuted during the Holocaust.

Burr, who described Carano as a “sweetheart,” said his co-star’s dismissal has made him worry about what he says in public. “It’s a weird time. Unless she did some truly horrible shit or said overtly racist s***. I don’t know. I think there is just too many channels. And then you gotta do sensational s***. I don’t know what the f*** it is. I’m on that f***ing show. Now, I gotta watch what the f*** I say.”

In February, Carano shared an Instagram post that compared “hating someone for their political views” to the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust, which included an image taken during the Lviv pogroms. Shortly after, Disney confirmed that Carano had been fired from The Mandalorian. In a statement, Lucasfilm said that Carano’s social media posts “denigrat[ed] people based on their cultural and religious identities”. That same day, the former MMA star was dropped by United Talent Agency.

Burr, who played Migs Mayfeld on the series, defended the actress on a recent episode of The Bill Bert Podcast, saying, “Super nice f***ing person. And you know whatever and somehow someone will take this video and they’ll make me say something else and try to get rid of my bald action figure. It’s how it is out there. It’s fucking crazy times. People just waiting, laying in the weeds.”

According to sources, Disney had been contemplating firing Carano for some time after a series of controversial tweets were called out. Although she was expected to take part in the studio’s investor call in December, when it announced a number of upcoming Star Wars shows, she was finally removed from the presentation. The future of her character is unknown at this time.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian is set to arrive next year after the spinoff The Book of Boba Fett debuts later this year.
