The developers of Enchanted Portals have admitted they’re ‘prepared for some backlash’ over the similarities between their game and Cuphead.
No, these are not screenshots of the long-awaited Cuphead DLC or indeed anything to do with developer StudioMDHR, they’re from a new Kickstarter-bound game that has merely been ‘inspired’ by Cuphead.
One of the most successful indie games of recent years, Cuphead mixes old school 2D shooter gameplay with even older school animation, inspired by short films of the 1930s.
Enchanted Portals’ visuals are nowhere near as authentic to the period but the game still looks good, in a knock-off brand kind of a way. Especially as Spanish developer Xixo Games Studio is composed of just two people.
But because the Internet only has two settings – love or hate – they’ve come under increasingly hostile fire for daring to try and emulate Cuphead.
Although the game obviously looks and plays like Cuphead you could argue it’s no different from the legion of Call Of Duty clones or Mario Kart wannabes out there.
‘Yes, of course Cuphead was a huge inspiration for Enchanted Portals’, artist Gemma told Polygon. ‘We’re both avid fans and we wanted to make something similar, but always from a place of respect and admiration for the original.’
‘We were prepared for some backlash, but the trailer definitely reached way more people than we could ever anticipate, and all the hate and negativity coming our way has definitely had a huge impact on us.’
The plan for Enchanted Portals is for it to become a Kickstarter project, although the crowd-funding campaign hasn’t yet begun.
It’s certainly already received enough publicity for the Kickstarter to be successful, but whether that will translate into money-paying backers remains to be seen.
