Diablo 3: The Best Wizard Builds, Ranked

Diablo 3: The Best Wizard Builds, Ranked

Among all classes in Diablo 3, the Wizard is consistently ranked as the most difficult to solo with. Sure, you’ve got more damage than you even know what to do with in almost any build you choose. But when it comes to taking one on the chin and then getting up afterward, it’s fair to say your first choice to take that hit wouldn’t be the Wizard.

Is this because the Wizard is just a bad class to play? Absolutely not. The fans often express anger or outright dismiss such polls because they include rookies and amateurs. The pro players anxiously hop onto their Wizards all by themselves and feel confident about their chances because, with the right build, enemies never get a chance to deliver that aforementioned blow to the chin.

Frost Hydra

  • Active skills: Spectral Blade (Barrier Blades), Teleport (Safe Passage), Hydra (Frost Hydra), Arcane Torrent (Flame Ward), Blizzard (Unrelenting Storm), Storm Armor (Shocking Aspect)
  • Passive skills: Galvanizing Ward, Elemental Exposure, Arcane Dynamo, Audacity
  • Key Armor Sets: The Typhon’s Veil
  • Key Weapons: Serpent’s Sparker, Winter Flurry
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

Between the Blizzard and the Hydras you can set down, everything on the map will be either slowed or frozen. Slowed and frozen targets make for excellent target practice in the Wizarding world.

Explosive Blast

  • Active skills: Electrocute (Surge of Power), Frost Nova (Frozen Mist), Diamond Skin (Prism), Teleport (Calamity), Explosive Blast (Chain Reaction), Storm Armor (Scramble)
  • Passive skills: Illusionist, Elemental Exposure, Audacity, Evocation
  • Key Armor Sets: Tal Rasha’s Elements, Sage’s Journey
  • Key Weapons: Wand of Woh, Orb of Infinite Depth
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Resource Cost Reduction

At one time, the sole purpose of Explosive Blast was to farm. Make no mistake, this is still the best farming build in the game. But thanks for some additional items and creative thinking, this is now a top-tier build in greater rifts in addition to gaining experience quickly.

Arcane Orbit

  • Active skills: Spectral Blade (Barrier Blades), Arcane Orb (Arcane Orbit), Explosive Blast (Chain Reaction), Teleport (Safe Passage), Slow Time (Exhaustion), Ice Armor (Crystallize)
  • Passive skills: Arcane Dynamo, Illusionist, Audacity, Unstable Anomaly
  • Key Armor Sets: Delsere’s Magnum Opus, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Unstable Sceptor, Triumverate
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

This is about as close to it gets to a melee build for a Wizard. You’re able to do so talks to slowing time, lots of armor, and a ton of damage with the Arcane Orbs while in your Slow Time field.

Archon

  • Active skills: Arcane Torrent (Static Discharge), Archon (Slow Time), Storm Armor (Shocking Aspect), Magic Weapon (Deflection), Black Hole (Absolute Zero), Slow Time (Time Warp)
  • Passive skills: Evocation, Galvanizing Ward, Audacity, Unstable Anomaly
  • Key Armor Sets: Vyr’s Amazing Arcana, Captain Crimson’s Trimmings
  • Key Weapons: Cantodo’s Resolve
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, Armor, Life on Hit

Archon can be faulted for being very bursty. But the game is designed based on the understanding that there are moments of burst damage. Bosses and elite enemies fear the Archon build more than any other.

Star Pact With Legacy Of Dreams

  • Active skills: Electrocute (Surge of Power), Meteor (Star Pact), Ice Armor (Crystallize), Ray of Frost (Cold Blood), Wave of Force (Arcane Attunement), Archon (Pure Power)
  • Passive skills: Evocation, Astral Presence, Audacity, Arcane Dynamo
  • Key Armor Sets: None
  • Key Weapons: Deathwish, Etched Sigil
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction, Armor, Area Damage

This is the first but not the last build that utilizes Legacy of Dreams, an item that offers a buff so long as you have no set bonuses. If you’re looking for the highest damage number in a single attack, this is the build that will get you there.

Energy Twister With Delsere’s Magnum Opus

  • Active skills: Arcane Torrent (Flame Ward), Slow Time (Time Warp), Magic Weapon (Deflection), Black Hole (Spell Steal), Energy Twister (Wicked Wind), Storm Armor (Power of the Storm)
  • Passive skills: Power Hungry, Unwavering Will, Elemental Exposure, Blur
  • Key Armor Sets: Delsere’s Magnum Opus, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: The Twisted Sword, Etched Sigil
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

The rune on the Energy Twister essentially turns the ability into a trap, not unlike one you would expect out of a Demon Hunter. Cast it in a hallway, get out, and watch the kill count pile up.

Energy Twister With Legacy Of Dreams

  • Active skills: Energy Twister (Wicked Wind), Teleport (Safe Passage), Magic Weapon (Deflection), Arcane Torrent (Flame Ward), Black Hole (Spell Steal), Storm Armor (Shocking Aspect)
  • Passive skills: Galvanizing Ward, Elemental Exposure, Blur, Audacity
  • Key Armor Sets: None
  • Key Weapons: The Twisted Sword, Etched Sigil
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

The concept of the build is identical to the last one, but this build gets the edge by virtue of freeing itself from restrictive item sets. This allows the player to choose best-in-slot items with no guilt.

Frozen Orb With Delsere’s Magnum Opus

  • Active skills: Spectral Blade (Barrier Blade), Teleport (Wormhole), Slow Time (Time Warp), Arcane Orb (Frozen Orb), Energy Twister (Wicked Wind), Storm Armor (Power of the Storm)
  • Passive skills: Power Hungry, Elemental Exposure, Unwavering Will, Unstable Anomaly
  • Key Armor Sets: Delsere’s Magnum Opus, Endless Walk
  • Key Weapons: Unstable Scepter, Triumverate
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

The Arcane Orb is already a consistent form of area damage. When turned into a frozen orb, it not only gains damage, it applies freeze effects to enemies. Never lose another fight with elites again with this build.

Frozen Orb With Legacy Of Dreams

  • Active skills: Spectral Blade (Barrier Blades), Arcane Torrent (Flame Ward), Magic Weapon (Deflection), Arcane Orb (Frozen Orb), Black Hole (Spellsteal), Storm Armor (Shocking Aspect)
  • Passive skills: Galvanizing Ward, Elemental Exposure, Power Hungry, Blur
  • Key Armor Sets: None
  • Key Weapons: Unstable Scepter, Triumverate
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

Freeing yourself from specific sets, yet again, is extremely advantageous and enables you to use much more flexibility. The Black Hole addition is a prime example of how liberating this can be on the rotation.

Mammoth Hydra With Legacy Of Dreams

  • Active skills: Spectral Blade (Barrier Blades), Teleport (Safe Passage), Hydra (Mammoth Hydra), Arcane Torrent (Flame Ward), Blizzard (Unrelenting Storm), Storm Armor (Shocking Aspect)
  • Passive skills: Galvanizing Ward, Elemental Exposure, Arcane Dynamo, Audacity
  • Key Armor Sets: None
  • Key Weapons: Serpent’s Sparker, Winter Flurry
  • Augment: Intelligence
  • Gems: Intelligence
  • Paragon: Movement Speed, Critical Hit Damage, Armor, Area Damage

The Mammoth Hydra spits fire in lines. Combine this with a Blizzard that slows everyone down and you’re looking at a fire and ice combination that makes this build the highest damage-dealing Wizard build in the game.
