EA Will Acquire Major Mobile Game Publisher Glu Mobile

Electronic Arts, the publisher of EA Sports, FIFA, Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, Madden NFL, Need for Speed, Titanfall and Plants vs. Zombies, is set to acquire Glu Mobile, the developer and publisher of Design Home, Covet Fashion, Deer Hunter, Diner DASH Adventures, Disney Sorcerer’s Arena and MLB Tap Sports Baseball, for $2.1 billion. The move is expected to solidify EA’s mobile games business.

“This transaction is the culmination of the tremendous work of the Glu team to deliver world-class interactive experiences for our players, while driving business momentum that has led to strong financial and operational results. As part of Electronic Arts, we will continue capitalizing on the opportunities ahead in the expanding mobile gaming industry,” said Glu CEO Nick Earl. “

The acquisition will create an impressive mobile product portfolio that includes more than 15 top live services with a combined $1.32 billion in bookings over the last twelve months. The portfolio comprises IP in sports, lifestyle, RPG, casual and other genres and leverages EA’s global marketing and distribution clout.

Glu Mobile will also benefit from EA’s network of 430 million players, including more than 100 million monthly active mobile players. In addition, Glu’s expertise in developing successful sports and casual mobile games, combined with EA’s development and marketing capacity will accelerate the creation of new games.

“Mobile continues to grow as the biggest gaming platform in the world, and with the addition of Glu’s games and talent, we’re doubling the size of our mobile business. With a deep IP portfolio and an expanding global audience, we’ll deliver more exciting experiences for our players and drive further growth for Electronic Arts,” said EA CEO Andrew Wilson.

Glu Mobile, whose team includes more than 500 mobile game developers, was founded in 2001. The company, headquartered in San Francisco, has offices in Foster City, Toronto and Hyderabad. In 2012, Glu Mobile acquired Gamespy Technologies from IGN Entertainment and shut down servers for older games like the Star Wars: Battlefront series, Sniper Elite, Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Neverwinter Nights.
