Japanese Horror Icon Ringu Is Joining Dead By Daylight

Kōji Suzuki’s Ring originally appeared in its native Japan as a novel published in 1991, from when it has spread its memorable images and horror through the popular culture like a creeping chill. The story of a curse contained in a video tape that, if watched, would kill the viewer in seven days hooked audiences. The novel was adapted into a Japanese movie in 1998, which became known as Ringu to North American and European audiences, before the story found even more audiences with the Hollywood remake The Ring in 2002.

Now the malevolent well and the long-haired girl is heading to the world of Dead by Daylight, the survival horror game from Behaviour Interactive. Ringu will be joining Dead by Daylight's expanding list of characters in March.

The new Chapter will take inspiration from Kōji Suzuki’s novel and the original film adaptation to offer new gameplay possibilities as it "merges the eerie and melancholic world of the psychological horror masterwork with the twisted fantasy of Dead by Daylight," Behaviour Interactive said.

Although the developer did not add exact details on how the collaboration will be implemented, players might expect a new killer, survivor, or map based on the Japanese horror. A creepy announcement trailer was uploaded, to get fans feeling well.

“The importance of the Ringu franchise in Japan, and its influence on culture around the world are undeniable. To be given the opportunity to dive into that legendary story as we bring this creation into Dead by Daylight is an immense honour”, Mathieu Côté said, Dead by Daylight's game director.

On the Japanese side, a producer at Kadokawa Corporation, who publishes Ringu, might have given players a little tip on how the character might interact in the game. "We’ll be sending one of our most haunting characters into the Fog to pour down horrors that will rival all the great predecessors,” Reiko Imayasu said. “Fans should beware of their heart; this deadly newcomer will definitely strike them, and they will tremble with fear whilst they wait.”
