The latest update has scrubbed the name of Markus ‘Notch’ Persson from the main menu screen for Minecraft.
He may have created one of the most popular video games ever made but Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has become a considerable embarrassment for Microsoft, for spewing bigoted and right-wing views on Twitter.
Microsoft bought Minecraft from Notch for a staggering $2.5 billion in 2014 and although they now have the full rights to the game they can’t hide the fact that he was the original creator.
As such he’s still listed in the credits but his name no longer appears on the main menu, which previously displayed random messages such as ‘The Work of Notch!’ and ‘110813!’ – a reference to his brief first marriage.
The change came with the recent 19w13a update and was spotted by fan @decrepitlab, who was able to check the game’s internal files to confirm that Notch has completely been removed from everything but the credits.
Microsoft hasn’t commented on the changes but assuming it is because of his Twitter outbursts it’s an ignoble fate for someone who at one point was one of the most influential developers in the industry.
Persson has shown no recent interest in making any new games and currently lives in America, where he bought a $70 million mansion in Beverley Hills in 2014.
Meanwhile, Minecraft has continued its success without him and regularly features at Microsoft’s E3 media briefings, with this year’s event expected to focus on spin-off Minecraft: Dungeons.
