PlayStation VR 2 is going to be released at some point early next year. The news comes directly from the official Twitter accounts for PlayStation, most notably the French and Japanese accounts which recently tweeted “available in early 2023” along with a picture of the device in question.
Players quickly took to social media platforms like Reddit and Resetera in order to discuss what at the time appeared to be a leak. The overall feeling is one of anxious anticipation, especially now that multiple official sources have confirmed the news.
The device has been widely expected to launch in 2023. "My latest supply chain check suggests that the assembler and several component providers of the PlayStation VR 2 will start mass production with about 1.5 million unit shipments in the second half of 2022,” Analyst at TF International Securities Ming-Chi Kuo said on Twitter back in May. "Sony may launch it in the first quarter of 2023, depending on the development schedule of PlayStation VR 2 game titles.”
The analyst noted how "I believe PlayStation VR 2 will have a good start thanks to the support of more than 20 game titles from first and third-party developers at launch. Sony's position and resources in the games industry can accelerate triple-A VR game development, benefiting VR growth."
Chief Executive Officer at Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan previously noted how the company plans to launch more than 20 games alongside the PlayStation VR 2. "There is a considerable amount of money being spent on partnerships with independent and other third-party developers to secure a considerable pipeline of attractive VR content at the launch of the PlayStation VR2,” the executive remarked. “That energy, that effort, and that money will continue to grow as the installed base of PlayStation VR 2 headsets grows.”
