Red Dead Redemption 2 has been out for over three years now – feel old yet? – but modders are still tinkering with it. Console players have long had to make do without all the fun PC gamers revel in, but now, a PS4 jailbreak mod developer has made it possible to play the game at a smooth 50ish fps.
As spotted by Ben T. on Twitter, PS4 mod maker illusion released the fps unlock patch on GitHub, meaning anyone can download it for free. Unfortunately, the mod is limited by the CPU capacity of whatever console you're playing on, meaning even though it is advertised as a 60fps unlock, on a PS4 Pro, you can expect a framerate in the 50s – which is still solid.
Unlike GTA 5, which is set to get a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S enhanced edition in March, there has been no announcement of an upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2. This is a shame for fans of the epic western game, but it follows a trend of Rockstar favouring GTA. It makes sense, as GTA 5 has become the highest-earning piece of media in history, but it's still a shame Red Dead isn't getting any time in the spotlight.
Hopefully, seeing patches and mods go live for jailbroken consoles will motivate Rockstar to put out PS5 and Xbox patches that can bring Red Dead Redemption 2 up to current hardware standards.
While GTA Online may be the more popular Rockstar property right now, Red Dead Online is still enjoyed by many, and we have a full guide and walkthrough to help veterans and newcomers to the frontier.
If you're hungry for more mods – and have Red Dead on PC – you should check out this camera mod that allows you to view all of the game's cutscenes from new perspectives. This will give the cinematic game an even more filmic feel. If that's not movie-like enough for you, Henry Cavil wants to see Red Dead Redemption adapted for the silver screen.
