Sony Reveals New PlayStation App Ahead Of PS5 Launch

The aging PlayStation App for iOS and Android is getting an overhaul ahead of the PS5 launch next month. A massive software update is rolling out today, introducing new features such as voice chat, PS Store integration, a news feed, and remote access to your PS5.

Sony offers the PlayStation App for free, although you’ll need a PlayStation Network account in order to use any of the new functions. The update is rolling out across the globe over the course of the day and is compatible with iOS 12.2+ and Android 6.0+. Here are a few of the key features you can expect to find once the update goes live:

  • Messages Integration: PS Messages app is now integrated in the PS App. This means that PS Messages will no longer be available for download as a standalone app. Don’t worry – all your old messages have been safely transferred over to the new PS App system.
  • Voice Chat + Party Groups: Create a party from the app and chat with up to 15 people using your phone.
  • PS Store Integration: You’ll now be able to remotely download games to your PS4 or PS5 using the PS App.
  • PS5 Features: Launch games remotely, manage storage, and sign in to PS5 all from your smartphone.
  • News Feed: Stay up to date on the latest PlayStation content with a dedicated news feed featuring developer commentary and PS Blog articles.

The app’s new design and layout looks much better than before, featuring a sleek black interface with most of the features broken out into easy to find tiles. Having the ability to remotely download games from your phone is likely to be one of its most used features, as games today are notoriously large and take ages to download. Now, you’ll be able to start an install before leaving work and have the game ready to play by the time you get home.

The new PlayStation App update is rolling out worldwide throughout the day. PlayStation 5, meanwhile, is set to launch in select markets on November 12, with a global launch to follow on November 19.
