Get ready for what is certainly going to be one of the busiest weeks in Hearthstone’s history thanks to the rotation into the Year of the Phoenix, Ashes of Outlands expansion, and most importantly, the new Demon Hunter class!
While the expansion releases on Tuesday, April 7, the rotation of cards into the Hall of Fame has already occurred and players can log in now to receive their automatic Dust refunds. In addition, there is a short story prologue to play retelling the story of how Illidan Stormrage became a Demon Hunter.
This consists of four battles against an AI opponent using the new class cards. Completing this prologue will automatically unlock the class and give players a free deck that can be used in Standard and Wild modes as of April 7.
In the lead up to the upcoming launch, Hearthstone Lead VFX Artist Hadidjah Chamberlin and Game Designer Stephen Chang spoke about the process through which the Demon Hunter class was envisioned, designed, and now released.
The process was of course a challenge since it had never been done before in the history of the game, and we are not likely to see a Windwalker class added anytime soon. Interestingly, they describe how the hero power is what they began with, and largely identifies much of Illidan’s core identity in Hearthstone.
