Marvel has already established its cinematic universe and is swiftly moving on to unlock the Multiverse in upcoming features. DC, on the other hand, is still struggling to get its extended universe up and running, despite Zack Snyder’s plans to ignite it. On the back of Matt Reeves’ announcement that The Batman will be set on Earth-2, DC fans are now wondering whether future projects will follow suit.
Robert Pattinson’s first time donning the cowl is a promising performance to look forward to within Matt Reeves’ darker vision of the Caped Crusader. The Batman wrapped filming last month and seems to be on track (for now) to make its March, 2022 release date. Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will take a deeper descent into vengeance through Reeves’ adaptation, carrying a heavier tone similar to Todd Phillips’ Joker with Joaquin Phoenix. While the DC FanDome trailer gave us a lengthy look at The Batman’s characters, we didn’t find out until almost a year later that Bats would be inhabiting Earth-2 – isolating the project further from past DC films.
Earth-2 made its first appearance in The Flash #123 from 1961, and gave a platform for the DC Golden Age heroes to appear. Earth-2 was established to allow the Silver Age and Golden Age versions of each character, such as The Flash, to appear simultaneously, and it will now serve as a stage for Pattinson’s Batman to co-exist in the same universe with Ben Affleck’s. Earth-2 has already been mentioned in The CW shows Arrow and The Flash, and it is also expected that the upcoming Gotham PD show will be set within Earth-2 as well.
An upcoming Superman reboot is rumored to be helmed by J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates, that will allegedly introduce Val-Zod to the DCEU. Comic book fans will know Val-Zod as one of the last Kryptonians and the second character to carry the Superman mantle. Val-Zod’s narrative also takes place on Earth-2, which poses the question: Will the Superman reboot share Earth-2 with The Batman? There is another rumor that Michael B. Jordan will be playing Val-Zod in the reboot, and Earth-2 could house the start of a sturdy, smaller shared universe for DC – while fans keep petitioning for the SnyderVerse on Earth-1.
In addition to the SnyderVerse campaign, followers of the Snyder Cut are now backing Ben Aflleck’s solo Batman film which got shelved to make way for Reeves’ The Batman. Affleck was attached to write, direct, and star in the feature that would act as another drop in the SnyderVerse – a project which is now in the hands of Warner Bros.
