Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 makers reveal bad news for Nintendo Switch fans

Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is one of the biggest Nintendo Switch games on the horizon, and at long last fans have received an official update on development. The sequel to the critically acclaimed Switch and Wii U open-world Zelda was first unveiled as a surprise announcement at the end of last year’s Nintendo Direct during E3 2019. But since then news on the title has been especially quiet, with no new trailers, screenshots or major announcements on the title coming from the House of Mario.

There had been rumours that Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 was going to get released in 2020, with a listing popping up online recently for a collector’s edition.

French retailer WTT – who had correctly leaked the existence of Witcher 3 for Switch previously – listed a BoTW special edition as releasing before the end of the year.

But that now seems unlikely, with Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma recently giving an update on how work on the title is progressing.

Aonuma-san appeared in a video this week announcing Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, a new musou game made by Nintendo and Koei Tecmo based on Breath of the Wild.

As the name suggests, the upcoming Dynasty Warriors-style game will let players experience first-hand the Great Calamity that’s so often mentioned in Breath of the Wild.

And as Aonuma-san appeared to introduce the next Hyrule Warriors game the Nintendo bigwig gave an update on Zelda Breath of the Wild 2.

The Zelda producer said: “Regarding the sequel, in order to make the vast world you enjoyed exploring in the original game even more impressive, the team is working hard on its development, so you’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can provide more updates.”

From the sounds of it, it doesn’t seem like Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 will make a potential 2020 release date but fans will have to wait and see.

The new Hyrule Warriors game was announced out of the blue, revealed without warning in a typical surprise announcement that Nintendo has become specialists at.

And fans who like what they’ve seen so far won’t have too much longer to wait to get their hands on it, with a release date pencilled in for November 20.

Ahead of the Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity release date Nintendo has also set the date for another announcement on the title.

On Saturday September 26 Nintendo will be sharing another look at the new Hyrule Warriors game.

Announcing the upcoming reveal, the official Nintendo of America Twitter posted: “Excited about the reveal of #HyruleWarriors: Age of Calamity and eager to learn more? You won’t have to wait long! We’ll be sharing another look at the game on 9/26. #Zelda #NintendoSwitch”.

According to the @zelda_musou Japanese Twitter account, this will be a 50 minute presentation taking place as part of the Tokyo Game Show 2020.
