New Detective Pikachu game coming to Switch

The adventures of Detective Pikachu will continue on Nintendo Switch. Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, announced a follow-up to the original Nintendo 3DS game at a press conference in Tokyo today.

Ishihara was unusually vague about what the Switch follow-up to 2016’s Detective Pikachu would be, only saying that it would offer some sort of conclusion to the story of the first game. Detective Pikachu for Nintendo 3DS ended on something of a cliffhanger, but it’s not clear if the Switch successor will be a direct sequel or an expanded port of the original game with additional story content.

The official Pokémon Twitter account was similarly mysterious about what the new Detective Pikachu game will be.

“Can’t wait to keep sleuthing with [Detective Pikachu]? Plans are under way to bring this crime-solving Pikachu to Nintendo Switch!” the company said on Twitter. “The details of this game are still a mystery…so keep checking back here for more clues.”

Detective Pikachu is the basis for the recently released film of the same name. A spinoff of the core Pokémon franchise, Detective Pikachu explored the adventures of Tim Goodman and his talking Pikachu sidekick as they solved mysteries, including the whereabouts of Tim’s missing father.
