Persona 4 Golden comes to Steam today in surprise launch

Persona 4 Golden, the definitive version of the lauded JRPG, is making its way to Steam on Saturday, in a surprise launch by developer Atlus. The game is available for purchase right now.

This marks the first time Persona 4 Golden has been available on any platform besides the PlayStation Vita, where it was launched in Japan and the U.S. in 2012. While 2012 was the Vita’s launch year, the platform has since languished, with Sony ending manufacturing and shipping in 2019. Golden added new characters, additional story and other features to the original Persona 4, which was released for PlayStation 2 in 2008.

Persona 4 Golden’s Steam release includes no new content, or any noticeable changes in story, dialogue, or gameplay. But the PC release does include support for resolutions up to 2560×1440, as well as visual improvements to textures, art, and backgrounds to make them stand out on a monitor. It also supports keyboard and mouse play, includes Steam achievements and trading cards, and features Japanese and English voice acting.

The game’s plot unravels the mystery of a serial killer terrorizing Inaba, a remote Japanese town. The protagonist must solve the case before Inaba and its residents are overtaken by a mysterious fog that threatens to turn them all into mindless monsters. Like other Persona titles, the gameplay is a mix of procedural dungeons with turn-based combat, in which high school students are aided by their supernatural Persona abilities, and visual novel sections where the protagonist must strengthen his bonds with other Inaba residents in order to succeed.

Persona 4 Golden is out on Steam now in North America and Europe for $19.99.
