Amnesia: Rebirth, Frictional Games’ direct sequel to the original Amnesia: The Dark Descent, will be released on Oct. 20, the developer announced Tuesday. The first-person horror game is coming to PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.
A new trailer for Amnesia: Rebirth teases protagonist Tasi Trianon’s harrowing journey through the Algerian desert, where she “must do everything and anything to survive,” Frictional Games said. Armed with nothing more than the occasional match and a lantern, Tasi must face her fears in search of answers.
Thomas Grip, creative director at Frictional Games, said in a news release, “We aim to go beyond simple jump-scares and to affect players on a deeper level. While Rebirth will contain the terrifying encounters and sights you expect from an Amnesia game, it has a lot more focus on narrative than previous entries in the series. We want the player to form a strong bond with Tasi and intimately share her tribulations. This will not be your run-of-the-mill horror experience.”
Amnesia: The Dark Descent was released in 2010, followed up by Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs in 2013. (A Machine for Pigs was developed by The Chinese Room, but published by Frictional Games.) Frictional Games’ next title was Soma, a survival horror game that came out in 2015.
