Final Fantasy 14’s patch 5.3 has gone live, bringing an overwhelmingly large amount of content into the MMORPG.
The patch was delayed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic, but now that it’s finally here, let’s dive in to some of the biggest updates.
A Realm Reborn’s story quests have been condensed
The most important part of the patch for new players is that the notoriously long storyline in A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy 14’s base game, has been cut down a bit. Many of the quests that seemed to serve no purpose have been removed, and players will even be granted teleport tickets to take their character to a common quest location, The Waking Sands.
The Heavensward expansion is now free to play
Anyone playing on Final Fantasy 14’s free trial should be delighted to know that you can play the entire base game, and the Heavensward expansion for free now. You can level every job up to 60 (from 35), and participate in a plethora of content that was previously restricted.

There are new main scenario quests, with a new dungeon and trial
Without getting into spoilers, the new quests pick up right where patch 5.2 left off, and you have to figure out what’s going on with G’raha Tia and Elidibus. To complete the quests, you’ll have to venture into a new dungeon, as well as take down a big boss in a mystery trial fight. There’s also an “extreme” version of the trial fight for those who want to take on a challenge.
The second part of Yoko Taro’s Nier 24-man raid is here
Part two of the Nier crossover alliance raid is out now. Pick up the quest “We Can Rebuild Her” in Kholusia to unlock it. The gear rewarded for completing the raid is very 9S-like, and will be a must-have for anyone trying to perfect their Nier wardrobe.
Level your crafters with new Beast Tribe quests
Crafter players can now help out the Dwarfs, a Beast Tribe who need help building a tank. As usual, completing the beast tribe quests daily will yield exclusive rewards, like mounts and emotes, so make sure to get started.

To unlock the Dwarf Beast Tribe, you’ll need to complete the sidequest “Ronitt to the Rescue,” which is in Kholusia. If you don’t see it on your map, note that you’ll need to complete the quests that begin with “A Village of Woe” and “A Disagreeable Dwarf,” both also found in Kholusia. Once you finish all these, “It’s Dwarfin’ Time” will appear in the area to unlock the beast tribe. Note that you need a level 70 or higher crafter to participate.
Get in a robot and fight Sapphire Weapon
The next part of The Sorrow of Werlyt sidequest will have the player getting into a robot to duke it out with Sapphire Weapon, inspired by the Final Fantasy 7 creature. Note that this time the fight is not a party-based trial, but a solo instance. You can start this quest, “Sleep Now in Sapphire,” in The Lochs.
There is way more content, balance changes, and the like in patch 5.3. You can check out Square Enix’s patch notes for the whole shebang.
