A God of War PS4 dynamic theme released for the game’s first anniversary appears to be teasing something new from developer Sony Santa Monica.

The theme features an image of Kratos and Atreus sitting in a boat while observing the World Serpent and the Temple of Týr. Look closely, though, and you can see that a series of runes are engraved into the side of the boat. A fan on Reddit (via GamesRadar+) has discovered that, when translated from Norse to English, they spell out “Ragnarok is coming”.

That’s a pretty ominous phrase, and suggests that something new for God of War could be on the way.

Recently God of War’s director, Cory Barlog, tweeted “That’s not all…” in regards to the new anniversary theme and avatars that have appeared on PSN. He clarified that he was not teasing DLC, but could he be teasing a sequel announcement?

The events of God of War heavily imply not only another game, but one that would deal with the events of Ragnarok. Effectively the Norse apocalypse, Ragnarok involves a catastrophic battle and the death of several gods, which is par for the course when it comes to Kratos. It’s the perfect subject matter for the series to tackle next.

God of War was a critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards. While a sequel has not been formally announced, it makes sense that Sony would be planning a new installment in Kratos and Atreus’ journey.

Even if Barlog’s tease doesn’t reveal a sequel this month, it seems like Sony want us to pay attention to God of War. The game turns one year old on April 20, so it makes sense to keep an eye open on Saturday. Hopefully something is coming, and soon.

Matt Purslow is IGN UK’s News and Entertainment Writer, and would very much like a sequel to 2018’s best game, thank you very much. You can follow him on Twitter.
