Capcom’s next major expansion for Monster Hunter: World, known as Iceborne, is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Sept. 6, the developer announced on Thursday during a livestream. The Windows PC version will come to Steam sometime this winter.
Monster Hunter: World Iceborne will be a “massive” expansion, Capcom said, and will feature a new story, a new locale, and new monsters to battle. Iceborne will also bring back some fan favorites from previous games, including Nargacuga from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
Iceborne will send players to snowy Hoarfrost Reach, said to be the largest region in Monster Hunter: World so far. Players will have to keep themselves warm in the frigid new landmass by drinking hot drinks and bathing in natural hot springs to stave off the cold’s deleterious effects. In Hoarfrost Reach, players will encounter new creatures, like Popo, Stonebill, and Rime Beetles, insects that roll up balls of snow like dung beetles. Players can also hitch a ride on Cortos, winged creatures that you can use to get around.
New monsters in Iceborne include Banbaro, a new brute wyvern that likes to pick fights with other monsters and can hurl boulders and trees that get caught in its horns; Beotodus, one of the first big monsters players will fight, which likes to bury itself deep into the snow; and Velkhana, a new elder dragon that’s defined by its use of ice attacks.
To combat these new monsters, Capcom is adding new combat options, including the ability to use the slingshot-like Slinger while a player’s main weapon is drawn. The Slinger also has a new Clutch Claw, used to grapple onto monsters, and the Flinch Shot to stun them. Existing weapon types will also get new combos.
Players can find new challenges in Iceborne’s new Master Rank — similar to previous games’ G rank — which will make existing monsters more ferocious.
Monster Hunter: World Iceborne will cost $39.99 as a stand-alone expansion. A bundle featuring the main game and the Iceborne expansion will cost $59.99.
