Our first real look at Marvel’s Avengers, coming May 2020

The Avengers films have taken over the world, so it was only a matter of time before a game came around to capitalize on that popularity. Marvel’s Avengers, which is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, was finally shown off during Square Enix’s E3 2019 presentation today. It’s our first glimpse at actual gameplay from the project. All your pals, from Iron Man to the Incredible Hulk, are here.

The trailer shows off a battle taking place in San Francisco — but everything goes wrong, and our heroes are blamed for the tragedy. The crew ends up disbanding. “Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” Square Enix says. You’ll be able to play in online co-op with up to three friends.

Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix have a “multi-year, multi-game partnership” according to a teaser trailer released in 2017. Crystal Dynamics, the developers behind the Avengers project, is known for developing games for the Tomb Raider reboot. Crystal Dynamics will be working alongside Eidos Montréal to bring The Avengers to life — you might know them as the team behind games like Deux Ex: Mankind Divided.

Marvel’s Avengers will have characters and iconic moments from the larger cinematic universe, but according to Marvel, the game will still have a “completely original story.” The title is set up to follow the games-as-a-service model, with Marvel stating that it will “introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.” All additions to come will be free, and there will be no loot boxes. DLC will include new Marvel characters, such as Ant-Man. It also sounds like there will be plenty of cosmetics.

“When combined with original, fan-favorite, and classic outfits, there are nearly limitless ways to customize these iconic Heroes,” Square Enix says.

Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and Windows PC. A beta will be available on PS4 for players who pre-order.
