Ubisoft renames Rainbow Six Quarantine, for fairly obvious reasons

The Rainbow Six franchise has gone through a few iterations, and the next will be called Rainbow Six Extraction. Formerly known as Rainbow Six Quarantine, the game will be revealed at Ubisoft Forward. Ubisoft released a teaser trailer on Monday, alongside some more information about the game, and it looks pretty scary.

In Rainbow Six Extraction, a sinister parasite has completely taken over a science lab. (In general, scientists should probably stop studying sinister beasts inside labs, because it absolutely never goes well.) This is a tactical co-op shooter based off the foundation of Rainbow Six Siege, but without the focus on PvP combat.

Extraction is the name of the game — literally, but also in a gameplay sense. A major point of gameplay will be when to push forward and try to delve deeper into the laboratory, or when to cut your losses and get out of dodge with all of your limbs attached. Another major theme is “no one left behind,” which suggests getting survivors out of the laboratory will be a focus.

Rainbow Six Quarantine was first shown at E3 2019, and has been delayed to “increase development time.” Since 2020 was the year of the coronavirus pandemic and many people were forced into lockdown, it seemed inevitable the name would change, and now it’s official — though Ubisoft has not confirmed that’s the reason why the name was changed. Ubisoft Forward will start E3 2021 at 2 p.m. EDT on June 12, with the spotlight on games like Watch Dogs: Legion’s post-launch expansions.
