As today has proven, Ubisoft continues to be one of the few AAA developers interested in virtual reality (VR) content creation. If it’s not creating new IP’s like AGOS: A Game of Space then the company is leveraging the power of well-known franchises, the latest being Far Cry with Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity.
The project is being developed in partnership with Zero Latency VR, with the two companies initially teasing the collaboration back in June. Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity is based on Far Cry 3, going back to fight Vaas and his henchmen who have captured players on Rook Island.
This being a Zero Latency experience Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity will be completely free-roaming, with up to eight players armed with haptic guns able to take part. As such it’ll provide a unique way to explore the island which fans of the original videogame will know only too well. Each gameplay session lasts approximately 30 minutes.
“When it comes to creating dynamic, memorable gaming experiences, free-roam location-based VR expands the possibilities. Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity will offer players around the world the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich setting of Far Cry 3 and take on its iconic villain,” said Deborah Papiernik, VP New Business, Ubisoft in a statement.
“We are excited to be working with Ubisoft to bring the world of Far Cry 3 to VR,” said Tim Ruse, CEO, Zero Latency VR. “It’s going to be a special experience for fans to return to Rook Island in this incredibly immersive new way.”
Currently, Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity is slated for a 2021 launch, a Zero Latency exclusive. The company presently has more than 45 venues situated across 22 countries, with three in the UK run by MeetspaceVR.
Ubisoft continues to invest in the VR LBE space as the industry tries to slowly recover because of the pandemic. Having created experiences like Notre-Dame VR, Ubisoft Dusseldorf is expected to release VR escape game Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time soon. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity, reporting back with further updates.
